Cairo, on October 8th, 2018
The Freedom of Expression of Workers and Social Movements program (ANHRI) stated that September is the month of repeated annual protests for students and parents as they return to school.
This year, however, there has been a significant change in protests in terms of numbers, reasons and means used.
“Most parental protests in previous years were protesting the increased school fees. Most of the protests this year were due to the lack of schools to which students can enroll from the start, the failure to complete annual school renovations, the integration of schools and the crowded classes.”
The number of protests in September has increased compared to August, as the program monitored during September (60 protests) during the month, including 18 (labor and professional protests), and 42 (social protests). The increase is due to the return of schools which is a concern for more than 20 million students and their families.
A large number of protesters continue to resort to suicide to escape difficult economic conditions.
The Freedom of Expression of Workers and Social Movements program monitored 11 cases of suicide, same as the previous month.
Protests also spread to 17 governorates in social protests and 14 in labor protests.
Cairo governorate topped the labor and professional protests with four labor protests, followed by Gharbia. And Cairo also topped the social protests by 9 social protests, followed by Qalubia with five protests.
Protests continued to reach the construction sector, which has been growing steadily in the past, with the sectors of construction and construction materials, and (transport, communications, health, employees) to be first with two protests (2) each, while the education and scientific research sector took the lead in the social protests with 18 protests.
