Cairo July, 2018

The Freedom of Expression for Workers and Social Movements program of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) released today its monthly report on labor and social protests during June 2018.

The program announced that it had documented 38 protests in June, including 20 labor and professional protests and 18 social protests. Stressing that the decrease in the number of protests during the month of June compared to the previous months is due to coinciding with the Eid al-Fitr holiday and part of the month of Ramadan during the same month.

The program added: “In June, the Egyptian government cut subsidies on petroleum products and increased their prices in accordance with the instructions of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and set a new tariff for public transport, which led to a general feeling of tension and anger among citizens, which we observed in many provinces through the strikes of drivers of public transport in protest against the limited value of the increase for them, despite complaints from citizens.”

The month of June marked the end of the so-called “trade union elections” after a rehearsed process in which the Egyptian authorities excluded independent unions and independent labor leaders who represent the workers’ demands through police and administrative interventions.

Gibaly al-Maraghi continued to head the federation by acclamation, Mohammed Wahaballah continued as secretary-general of the federation. Adel Abdel Fadil was appointed as treasurer. In general, the General Union returned to its old form. The General Trade Union Councils were elected by acclamation, and the representation of women (0%) in the presidency of the General Unions.

Suicide, due to poor economic and social conditions, still comes on top of the list of protests, and Cairo remains the first city in terms of the number of protests.
