Cairo: 5 December 2018
The Freedom of Expression for Labor and Social Movements program of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) announced today that it has launched its report on the Labor and Social Protests Index for November 2018.
Using monitoring and analysis, the report addresses 62 protests, including 49 social protests and 13 labor and professional protests.
The program said: “The number of protests has reached its peak during November and the geographical area of protests expanded to include about 14 cities. Also, new sectors, such as the sports sector, were added to the arena of protests; due to a financial crisis endured by players and sporting clubs’ employees following a delay in the payment of their financial dues for several months. The education sector also continues to top the social protests sectors during the month of November”.
The program added: “As for the geographical distribution of labor and professional protests, Cairo is the same as the Aswan, Red Sea and Dakahlia in topping labor and professional protests in November by 2 protests in each of them. However, Cairo topped the social protests by 10 protests took place during the month”.
The Freedom of Expression for Labor and Social Movements program pointed out that the number of suicide cases is still ongoing at its monthly rate and hasn’t been affected by the change of seasons, which confirms the social dimension and the continuing frustration suffered by many social groups. The program also asserted that education protests have exceeded the limit of repeated annual protests as a result of the increase in school tuition fees, as they include protests against school textbooks and the schedules of exams.
