Lawyers at the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), in their capacity as the lawyers of prisoner of conscience Hisham Jaafar, have appealed the decision to exclude their client from the final applications of candidates running for the Journalists Syndicate’s mid-term elections.
In lawsuit No. 31973 for the year 73 (Urgent), the lawyers demanded to accept the appeal and halt the implementation of the decision issued by the head of the electoral commission of the Journalists Syndicate’s midterm elections and the syndicate’s head, to exclude Hisham Jaafar from the final application of candidates in the syndicate’s midterm election, which will be carried out on 1 March, considering the decision’s consequent effects, and to include the name of their client in the final applications of candidates running for the syndicate’s elections.
The lawyers also demanded in the lawsuit to rescind the decision issued by the electoral commission and to obligate the syndicate to pay all the attorneys’ fees and expenses.
It’s worth mentioning that Hisham Jaafar “hasn’t received any judicial rulings yet” but he has been held in pretrial detention since 21 October 2015 pending Case No. 720 of 2015 State Security. On 13 February 2019, Jaafar’s wife submitted his candidacy documents to run for the Journalists Syndicate’s mid-term elections on behalf of her husband; by an official proxy, but he was excluded from the final applications of candidates announced on the 19th of this month.
